If you follow me on Twitter, you probably saw my tweet two weeks ago: After paying a few hundred dollars for my ticket to Accra, I posted “I love Kenya Airways” on the microblogging service at Twitter.com .
Until today, I’ve been an admirer of KQ, as they’re usually called; although my love for Africa’s biggest airline service is more of a ‘first cut is the deepest’ affair.
Nevertheless, I believe they have a good service, their air hostesses are hospitable… and they are Kenyan (closer to home).
Unfortunately, as I type this blog, I am stuck in Kotoka Airport’s Boarding Gate 1, one hour after our ETD (expected time of departure). I was getting upset when, at 2050hrs no announcement had been made about us boarding, so I started asking around. A few of the people am meant to travel with were equally wondering what’s happening. In the spirit of being pro-active, I decided to move backwards to the previous checkpoint to find out.
I discovered that my situation wasn’t actually the worst!
Five passengers, who were supposed to travel yesterday missed their flight as they were told at Check-in that the aircraft was full. Really? Yes. It beats my understanding that in this era of software systems, an airline company can sell tickets to more people than they’re able to fly.
The five were taken to a hotel to wait for a possible chance today. So when I went back to the checkpoint, I found the five passengers, awaiting their Embarkation cards – which, in my understanding, means they will only travel if someone who booked – and checked-in, fails to board! That would only happen if they dozed off in the lounge/Gate.
But that’s just on half of the story: there’s another group, who were scheduled to travel today, and made their way to the airport in time, only to be told at the counter that they can’t be issued Boarding Passes as the flight is full! Their fault? They didn’t check-in online! That group includes a Ugandan man, in his late forties, who picked up an item I had dropped in the cue while we were checking in.
Am baffled! A lot of people stand to miss their connecting flights from Jomo Kenyatta Airport. The two hours and forty five minutes I was supposed to have between my flights have been reduced to 25minutes: well, that’s assuming we actually depart at 2250hrs as have been told! So help me God.
That reminds me: when did I last board an African airline that departed on time?
