US Navy Reservist from Boise to receive Purple Heart for actions in Afghanistan
BOISE, Idaho — A Boise member of the U.S. Navy Reserve will be awarded the Purple Heart this week for working to save six injured people despite his own wounds after a mortar attack in Afghanistan.
Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Rodney White will receive the medal Saturday at Gowen Field. The medal honors service members who were injured by enemies or in actions against the enemy.
Col. Tim Marsano said in a prepared statement that White was deployed to Combat Outpost Terra Nova in Afghanistan on Aug. 24 last year when he was injured by shrapnel from a mortar round. But despite his own injuries, White started giving medical assistance to others — even though mortar rounds were still being fired.
He treated six patients for five hours until medical evacuation units arrived.
