Atlantic Shore 13s stun West Windsor-Plainsboro twice to win state title

EAST WINDSOR - The West Windsor-Plainsboro 13-Year-Old All-Star team began the day flat and ended it deflated.

WW-P watched Atlantic Shore hold on for a 7-6 win in Game One of the Babe Ruth Southern New Jersey 13-Year-Old Tournament at the East Windsor PAL Complex. In the second game, the Devils left no doubt which team is the best in the state following an 11-1 victory to snatch the state crown from the Ciuffani Field gang.

“We were a little flat,” manager Brian O’Leary said. “I have always kind of had problems with this group in the morning. They don’t like morning games. They were sluggish right from the beginning, and you could feel it.”

WW-P would love to have back the first game. The way Atlantic Shore’s Kyler Pikus pitched in the second game (five innings, five hits, one run, no walks and four strikeouts), WW-P faced a tough challenge.

However in the first game, George Revock was the hard-luck loser. He went the distance, tossing a five-hitter with five walks and three strikeouts. He was charged with seven runs, but only two were earned.

A good infield throw to first would have prevented the Devils from scoring a run in the second inning. A grounder went between an infielder’s legs in the third inning. If that had been the third out, no run scores on the play and Nick Droboniku doesn’t follow with a two-run homer.

The two runs Atlantic Shore earned came in the fifth on Zack Newman’s solo shot and Cody Sadreamelli’s RBI single.

“Those errors killed us in that game,” the manager said. “Those errors were really destructive.”

WW-P stormed back with two in the third on Drew Panson’s two-run single and four in the sixth. C.J. Markisz and Panson plated a run each on singles while Revock stroked a two-run double. WW-P had the tying run at third in the seventh, but it couldn’t get the big hit.

WW-P’s season, however, isn’t over. It is hosting the Middle Atlantic Regional Tournament which starts Thursday.

“We learned something about our team,” the manager said. “It’s an easy prescription to win games at this level - throw strikes, catch the ball and have good at-bats. Today, we didn’t do that. At least we have a few days to regroup, practice and get ready for our first game.
