Current Forest Fire Situation - Aug. 7th

As expected, the lightning passing through the province over the past week was the cause for most of the 36 new fires in the province yesterday. In the Northwest new fires were reported in Kenora (9), Fort Frances (5), Dryden (3), Red Lake (5), Sioux Lookout (6), Thunder Bay (2) and Greenstone (3) districts. In the Northeast there was 1 new fire reported in Cochrane and 3 in North Bay. Red Lake fire #124, 50km west of the community of Red Lake in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park (see pictures), is a fire of concern and is now over 8,000 hectares. The light winds today should reduce the amount of smoke affecting communities. Information centres are being set up at the municipal office, Legion, post office and other locations in the town. The fire hazard is high to extreme in the Northwest Region. The public is urged to use caution with any outdoor fires. Outdoor fires are allowed, but people are reminded of their public responsibility for safe outdoor fire management under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario. Safe burning guidelines may be obtained at www.ontario.ca/fireprevention. If people are in an organized municipality or First Nations community, they must check with local fire officials before having an outdoor fire as there may be fire bans or local bylaws in place.
