Fabulous Thunderbirds to play County Fair Friday

CORVALLIS — Bandleader Kim Wilson has this strategy, see: When the Fabulous Thunderbirds storm a stage, they strike without the baggage that typically comes with performance. Like a set list, for instance. Spontaneity, as they say, is the spice of life.

“I just call ’em off,” Wilson said in a telephone interview from his Texas home, where he was kicking back in the space between dates. “If I call up a song, anybody I play with is supposed to know a semblance of how it goes. That’s what I like in a player. It’s not something I ‘prefer’ — it has to happen.

“This stuff ain’t rocket science. It’s all about the delivery. It’s all about the simplicity, the phrasing. There’s a self-assuredness that comes with the stage and the music in general, along with a lot of energy.”

And the Thunderbirds have reserves of that to spare. The parts may have changed, but it’s still a sleek machine, with Wilson, keeper of the flame and sole remaining original member, blowing savage harmonica and guiding his boys through a catalog nearly 40 years deep, as well as a comprehensive playlist that covers a century of American music.

Wilson’s been eyewitness to and rubbed shoulders with some of that history himself. Born in Detroit, Mich., and raised in Goleta, Calif., he picked up the harmonica at the age of 17. He proved such a natural that he was playing in bands within months. Eventually, he scored a gig with blues-guitar legend Eddie Taylor, he of “Bad Boy” and “Big Town Playboy” fame.

In 1974, while still in his early 20s, Wilson landed in Austin, Texas, where he assembled the Fabulous Thunderbirds with guitarist Jimmie Vaughan (currently touring with Buddy Guy), bassist Keith Ferguson and drummer Mike Buck. The hungry quartet regularly tore storied nightclub Antone’s to its floorboard joints while supporting some impressive names blowing through town.

One in particular took a shine to the young harmonica-wielder, and the two became friends. That the man (spelled m-a-n) in question was Muddy Waters made the relationship especially sweet.

“He was like my dad,” Wilson recalled with a fondness evident even long-distance. “He was very generous, a big kid, a larger-than-life character. He could walk into any room, and even if you didn’t knew who he was, you knew he was somebody.

“Before him I’d played with guys like Eddie Taylor, Albert Collins and George ‘Harmonica’ Smith. Then, when I got to Austin, I met Muddy and Jimmy Rogers.

Robert James "Bob" Ritchie (born January 17, 1971), known by his stage name Kid Rock, is an American singer-songwriter, musician and rapper with five Grammy Awards nominations. Kid Rock released several studio albums that mostly went unnoticed before his 1998 record Devil Without a Cause, released with Atlantic Records, sold 11 million albums behind the hits, "Bawitdaba", "Cowboy", and "Only God Knows Why". In 2000, he released The History of Rock which was a compilation of remixed and remastered versions of songs from his previous albums as well as the hit single, "American Bad Ass" and "F**k That".

Kid Rock released the follow up in 2001, Cocky. After a slow start, his country-flavored hit "Picture" with Sheryl Crow resurrected the album and it went gold as a single and pushed the album’s sales to more than 5 million. It was followed by 2003′s self-titled release, which failed to chart a major hit. In 2006 he released Live Trucker, a live album.

In 2007 Kid Rock released Rock n Roll Jesus, which produced a hit in "All Summer Long". It was his first worldwide smash hit, charting #1 in eight countries across Europe and in Australia. Rock N Roll Jesus would go on to sell 5 million albums worldwide including being certified triple platinum in the U.S. He released Born Free on November 16, 2010.
