Sporting KC adds offense with Jéferson
Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes and his staff are always sifting through potential players, hoping to find a good fit. Vermes does this in a detached sense, simply because of the sheer number of players to evaluate.</p><p>But by the time the game tape of Jéferson Rodrigues Gonçalves — simply known as Jéferson — came across his desk a few months ago, well, let’s just say Vermes and assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin knew they may have found someone special, someone whose ability reminded them of a former teammate who is widely regarded as one of the best players in Major League Soccer history.</p><p>“(Preki) absolutely came up,” Zavagnin said. “It didn’t take long to see some of the qualities. As a left-footed, attacking mid that can relieve pressure and bring guys in the game, it’s only natural for us to remember the last playmaker (like that) on the club.”</p><p>And while Jéferson’s MLS resume doesn’t compare to Preki, who played for the club during 1996-2000 and 2002-05, it won’t be nonexistent for long. Sporting introduced Jéferson, a 27-year-old center midfielder from Brazil, on Sunday as only the third designated player in team history.</p><p>“Some of the best creative midfielders in the world come from Brazil, and this guy is aggressive by nature,” Vermes said. “He can get in the final pass, get on the end of scoring opportunities and he’s pretty good on set pieces.”</p><p>Vermes added that Jéferson is entering what should be his prime. After beginning his career in 2005, Jéferson scored 13 goals in 2008 with Santo André and promptly joined Vasco da Gama, one of the most prestigious clubs in Brazil. He scored four goals in 2010 while on loan to Avaí, another first-division team, before returning to Vasco, which is loaning him to Sporting through the end of the year.</p><p>Come Dec. 31, Sporting will have the option to purchase Jéferson from Vasco. For now, that would appear to be fine to Jéferson, who had at least four other offers from teams in different countries but chose Sporting.</p><p>“In the end, I picked the choice that I believe is going to help me grow as a player,” Jéferson said through an interpreter Sunday. “I feel very fortunate to be in Kansas City, where the infrastructure (to get better) is basically laid out for you.”</p><p>Part of that, Jéferson added, was the lure of Livestrong Sporting Park and a quality of life in America that is “much better than I had in Brazil.”</p><p>But while Jéferson — who started doing research on MLS once Sporting showed interest — is appreciative of the opportunity, make no mistake about it, the 5-foot-11, 167-pounder is confident in his ability to make an impact this season.</p><p>“I bring some qualities that most scorers in the league don’t have,” Jéferson said. “I add a lot to the offensive style of the team, especially from shots outside the box.”</p><p>That’s why, Vermes and Zavagnin noted, it’s appropriate that Jéferson will wear No. 10, which traditionally goes to an attacking player who drives the offense, ala the great Pelé.</p><p>“We’ve been searching for a guy that’s kind of a difference-maker in the attacking midfield position,” Zavagnin said. “It’s been an area of need for us, not only this year but in years past. And it’s been difficult … finding that No. 10-type player that can also handle the physical demands of our league.”</p><p>And while Jéferson does have a history of nagging injuries, Vermes said Jéferson’s never had a significant injury, which bodes well for his ability to come in and make an instant impact.</p><p>“He better be able to come in and challenge for playing time right away,” Vermes said with laugh. “He’s going to have to acclimate himself quickly. He speaks a little English, but how well, we’ll find out shortly.
