Grand Junction Police doubtful new Ted Bundy DNA will solve 1975 case

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Police say they're doubtful that a recent discovery of the complete DNA profile of serial killer Ted Bundy will help solve the disappearance of a Grand Junction woman 36 years ago.

Authorities know that Bundy was in Grand Junction that spring thanks to a gas station receipt. For decades authorities have suspected Bundy may have been responsible for the unsolved disappearance of 24-year-old Denise Oliverson on April 6, 1975.

However, police tell The (Grand Junction) Daily Sentinel ( http://goo.gl/vvJbk ) that the discovery last week of a full vial of Bundy's blood likely won't close the Oliverson case.

"We are not blessed with a plethora of good or even bad physical evidence that might increase the long odds that a DNA match would or could be made," Deputy Grand Junction Police Chief John Zen said of Oliverson's case

Before his execution in Florida in 1989, Bundy confessed he had dumped a body in a river outside of Grand Junction, but he offered no other details.

Police believe Oliverson left her home for a bicycle ride the afternoon of April 6, 1975. The bicycle, along with her sandals, was found the next day under a bridge near railroad tracks. Oliverson never was found, and police have said they have no information suggesting she left the area on her own.

Thirty-six years later, Oliverson's sandals are the lone piece of evidence on hand at the department, according to Zen.

Bundy was also suspected of involvement in the December 1975 slaying of 19-year-old Deborah Tomlinson at a Grand Junction apartment. However, Bundy eventually was ruled out after authorities learned he was jailed elsewhere at the time of the murder.

Bundy sexually assaulted and killed several young women in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah and Florida between 1974 and 1978. He was sentenced to death in 1979 for the murder of two Florida college students and later for the rape and murder of the 12-year-old Florida girl.

Before he was executed in 1989, Bundy confessed to more than 30 murders and was suspected of many more.

The vial was discovered recently after Florida authorities received a call from a detective working a cold case in Tacoma, Wash. The blood had been taken in 1978.
