Austin spared the rash of heat-related deaths seen in Dallas

While Austinites continue to suffer through temperatures above 100 degrees, it seems the city has dodged a bullet in terms of heat-related deaths and injuries at least so far.

Dallas County has had 14 confirmed heat-related deaths this summer, but only two have occurred in Travis County all year, and neither happened this summer.

So why hasn't Austin had the same number of heat deaths as Dallas?

"Part of it is the sheer size of that city," Austin-Travis County EMS spokesman Warren Hassinger said of Dallas, which has about 1.2 million residents to Austin's nearly 800,000 . "You're not comparing apples to apples."

Also, it's been hotter in Dallas than in Austin. Temperatures have reached 110 degrees in Dallas, while Austin hasn't seen them go above 107.

It could also be a question of how heat-related deaths are classified. Steven Kurtz, a representative of the Dallas County medical examiner, said it's up to each medical examiner's discretion on whether to include heat as a factor in a death.

Sarah Scott, the chief administrative officer for the Travis County medical examiner, said deaths are deemed heat-related when they occur "during or after exposure to a hot environment, in which heat stress is considered to be a significant factor in the demise."

Kurtz said that heat victims in Dallas ranged in age from 38 to 91. The common thread is that they were found in a "really hot environment," such as a superheated house or the outdoors.

According to The Dallas Morning News, the latest death in that city related to extreme heat was reported Friday. The victim was a 53-year-old woman whose cause of death was ruled to be hyperthermia, or extreme heat, with hypertension and diabetes as contributing factors.

Most of this year's heat victims in Dallas have been found dead in their sweltering homes. At least two were homeless men, the newspaper reported.

Hassinger credited the wealth of resources available to homeless people in Austin and strong education initiatives by local emergency authorities with possibly keeping the number of deaths down.

"All of those little things add up," he said.

Hassinger said there were 84 calls to EMS for heat-related complaints between July 1 and Thursday . That's up from 61 during the same time last year — a much cooler, rainier summer. But the number is not as high as in 2009, when there were 101 calls in the same period. The summer of 2009 set records for heat, but many of those records were shattered this summer.
