Rembering Tucker's: No place like North Platte

As a musician of 15 years, my father had played the Hammond organ in every corner of the state of my own television programs, known as the Show "Gayle Walton on Sunday night, the sale of my discs, albums, sheet music and sign autographs in the local record stores.

But one of the main hotspots of my father would say to do in North Platte.

My parents, Gale and Helen Walton were in Geneva and they had a company of fur manufacturing -. Gale Furs Walton They had fur customers in North Platte and one was the owner of Tuckers Caf.

My custom car, called Bessie, carried all the equipment necessary for the body to travel far, then we would go to North Platte. It seemed that the left of the center of the state, but still a long way from Geneva, in those days on U.S. Highway 6 and Highway 30 in the United States.

Little did I understand the history of North Platte and women who came from much further. Back in the 40s they descend on North Platte with cookies, cakes and pies for the soldiers of the Second World War through the city on a Union Pacific train.Hundreds of trains went through North Platte with these young men and detained for 10 minutes only 10 minutes of pure delight for both men and women who had prepared for them. Many husbands of women already in service in the army, leaving a wife serviceman, Fae Wilson armed with only his creativity, desire and an opportunity to 10 minutes to give the war effort in its own special way. Amazing! The idea that she orchestrated with his friends became known as the North Platte Canteen. The city at that time had a population of only 12,000 people and one third of them had probably left the city to serve in the war.

The city had grown much larger in 1953, but down the street from the station Tuckers Caf was always with the quarter-canteen inside.

Every weekend, the father makes Bessie was packed and ready to go. Off we head to North Platte.

As I remember Tuckers Café was built in tiers. As they had not hired me as a live music before, they have simply taken a stand (one step) and built the floor to another a few inches to the scene. In this way, the body would be set up high so I could see the crowd and use a microphone to announce my musical numbers.

For years we've heard the lament that there's nothing to do in Nebraska. At the Star-Herald, we don't believe that. Western Nebraska is the best place in the state to enjoy outdoor and visitor activities, and we want to promote the scenic, historic and neighborly venues that make this a special place to visit and to live.

When we set out to put together "101 Things to do in Wyobraska" we knew it wouldn't take long to come up with a list. But this time we wanted to do more than catalog interesting tourism stops or offer a calendar of events. We decided to focus some of our attention on hidden gems and special must-do activities — not "Visit Potter" but (No. 24) "Eat a Tin Roof Sundae in Potter."

And although you'll find plenty of festivals and tourist stops on this list, we also wanted to highlight some out-of-the-way places, including many that are virtually free except for the gas it takes to get there. They're the sort of places that it takes time and some exploring to learn about.

Obviously, there are more than 101 things to do around here, so please don't get mad if one of your favorites isn't included. The list couldn't, and doesn't, include everything, and we plan to make it an annual project. 1. Photograph the wonders of Toadstool Park

Though a bit remote, Toadstool Geologic Park, located about 18 miles northwest of Crawford, is a wonder for the eyes and worth the drive. The park, located in the Badlands, has towering rock formations said to favor the toadstool in appearance. Fossil deposits are contained in the sediments of the landscape. An interactive map with specified points will occupy the most curious seekers, with fossilized footprints of rhinos, giant pigs and other birds along the finds to be "discovered." To reach Toadstool Park, travel five miles north of Crawford on Highway 71, then 13 miles west and northwest on a scenic, but well-marked, road to the park.
