Nursing home patient dies from burns suffered during argument
The 42-year-old man was burned during an argument with a 72-year-old woman Tuesday about 9 p.m. at the St. Charles Health Care Center at 1539 Delachaise St., said John Gagliano, the coroner's chief investigator. The victim's name was being withheld pending notification of family.
Police will arrest Joann Everett in connection with the death, said office Garry Flot, a Police Department spokesman. Everett was under police supervision Friday at a local hospital. Flot, citing privacy laws, could not say why Everett was taken to the hospital.
While Everett will be booked for the death, she also will face an aggravated arson charge, Flot said.
The New Orleans Fire Department said staff at the nursing home extinguished the fire on the man's body before firefighters arrived. The victim was taken to the burn unit at Baton Rouge General Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns to 80 percent of his body, Gagliano said. The victim died from his burns about 1 p.m. Wednesday, Gagliano said.
A nursing home representative would not comment on the incident, instead issuing a statement saying employees are working with authorities while they finish their investigation.
The Fire Department originally said the man's gauze caught fire because he was outside smoking.

Two years of such imprisonment at hard labor shall be without benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence" (legis.state.la.us/lss/lss.asp?doc=78552). So that statute doesn't mention the homicide part, with which the alert says Ms. Everett will be booked. I'll add this death to the murders list as the second unspecified homicide of the year, and check on Ms. Everett's booking in the next few days. !
