Skaneateles Festival adds instant composers, improvisation and more
While you're there Skaneateles' lake and shopping scene have made it a summertime haven — especially for Rochesterians, as it's located only about an hour and a half east of the city. Here are some recommendations to enhance your trip:
Restaurants
If you've never been to Skaneateles before, a trip to Doug's Fish Fry should be on your list. The establishment is low-key; order your food up front, and then find a seat in the diner-like dining area. Entrees, which include everything from fried fish to scallops to lobster, are delicious. That's why they "have lines going down the street on a Friday night," says Susan Mark, executive director of the Skaneateles Festival. For the budget-conscious, Johnny Angel's and Skan-Ellus Drive-In serve burgers, hot dogs and more. If you're looking for more upscale eateries, Kabuki has creative sushi, Elderberry Pond is an organic restaurant, and Blue Water Grill serves casual fare with some outdoor seating with a view of Skaneateles Lake. Accommodations
For a taste of luxury by the lake, Mirbeau Inn and Spa has everything to help you relax, from its French décor, high-class dining and award-winning spa. Another top choice is the Sherwood Inn, a historic building on Skaneateles' main drag. For the budget traveler, the Birds Nest Motel and Whispering Winds Motel come recommended by the festival.
Activities
Naturally, Skaneateles is full of options for aquatic fun. Mid-Lakes Navigation offers boat tours. But if you're planning to stay on dry land for a day, you might want to check out the Barrow Art Gallery to see John D. Barrow's historic landscape paintings. The gallery shares a building with the Skaneateles Library. And remember to check the Skaneateles Festival website each day for "Music Blast" concerts, featuring world-class musicians performing in locations all around town in the afternoons.
The Skaneateles Festival begins Wednesday and runs through Sept. 3. Season subscriptions range from $184 to $225 (students and seniors are $172 to $213; children under 13 are free). The festival also offers a Flex 8-Pack for $148. One-week subscriptions run from $50 to $64 ($46 to $60 for students and seniors). Thursday and Friday concerts are priced from $20 to $24 ($18 to $22 for students and seniors).

The festival, which runs four weeks starting Wednesday, will feature novelties such as impromptu concerts in nontraditional spaces, compositions created by your next-door neighbor (who isn't even a musician) and concerts on a stately lake-house porch.
