Customs rakes in N16b from Lagos Airport command in half year

Lagos (WorldStage Newsonline)-- Murtala Muhammed International Airport Command of Nigeria Custom Service (MMAC), Ikeja Lagos said it collected N16 billion revenue for the Federal Government during the first half 2011 while it targets about N42 billion in full year, the customs Area controller Michael Adedeji Adewole has said.

According to him, in the first six months of 2011, the command collected N16,032,273,876.00 billion which represents 38.09 per cent of its revenue projections.

The customs boss explained that the monthly revenue target translated to about N3.5billion, when cargo and related operation at the MMAC were at full swing with expected boost in flight operations.

He gave the breakdown of monthly revenue collection as N2,035,721,956.51 for January 2011 while the figures for February stands at N2,949,371,196.07 with figures for March 2011, stand at N2,518,289,989.86.

Revenue breakdown for April 2011 stood at N2,959,822,99 while the revenue for May 2011 was N3,267,477,290.28 with the revenue for June at N2,736,320,620.38.

Adewole explained with the deployment of Information Communication Technology (ICT), the MMAC which comprises the cargo wing of MMIA, the free zone, Airline Service Limited (ASL) as well as the bonded Terminal (Cressida), the Nigerian Customs Services (NCS), had improved on their services delivery and revenue earner for the government.

He explained that amongst other mandate, the customs command performed the primary function of collecting revenue for government as well as accounting for it, even as it had gone many steps further to stem the tide of smuggling through its well co-ordinated anti-smuggling strategies.

Adewole explained that the Federal Government agency also assisted in the enhancement of the nation’s security even as it was playing its role in co-ordinating multi-lateral efforts to improve global security and trade facilitation.

The customs he said achieved a lot around the MMAC through promotion of inter departmental relationship among various security and aviation agencies including the SSS, Nigerian Immigration Service, National drug Law Enforcement agency (NDLEA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian Airspace Management agency (NAMA), Nigerian Meteorlogical services ( NIMET) and the Nigeria Air force, the police and other members of the airport security committee.
