Lions to host prostate screening
Annual Prostate Screening Clinic will take place at the Lions Club on Saturday, August 13 from 8 am to 12 noon. All males, especially those 40 years and over, are encouraged to attend this free screening.The medical team for the screening will include Antiguan Dr Dwayne “Baba” Thwaites and Dr Tasha Cooke, a consultant urologist at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She also has a private practice at the Montego Bay Hospital and Urology Centre.
In addition, Dr Brian Cohen, will be returning for a third year. Dr Cohen has been practicing at Victoria Urological Associates in North Carolina, since June 2008 and he is a trained urologist with specialized training in Female Urology, Incontinence, Neurourology, and Voiding Dysfunction.
The team will be assisted by volunteers from the American University of Antigua School of Medicine.
Lions President Lennox Looby paid tribute to Dr. Thwaites, whose idea it was to host these free prostate screening clinics.
“In 2007, Dr Thwaites approached the club about starting these screenings and the Board of Directors under the leadership of then president Lion Hordley Forbes readily agreed to provide the sponsorship,” he said.
“That year we did clinics at a number of locations in Antigua and Barbuda costing the Lions Club about EC $30,000. Dr Thwaites is a son of the soil and it is wonderful and inspiring to see him taking this initiative to give back to his country.”
Looby explained that in addition to the medical checks and diagnosis, Dr Thwaites is compiling statistics on prostate cancer in Antigua and Barbuda.
Dr Thwaites has also been able to attract other sponsors including Francis Trading, Price WaterhouseCoopers, Harney Motors, Hadeed Motors, Bargain Centre, Royal Bank of Canada, CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank, Astra Zeneca via AS Bryden, Kennedy’s Club, Belmont Clinic, Occasions Party Rental, Quin Farara’s, and Buccaneer Beach Club. Bio-Medical Laboratory will perform the blood testing at a specially discounted cost.

Say you lived in a house for just one year because of employment changes. This entitles you to an exemption of 5,000 or half the original 0,000 exemption you would’ve gotten.
3. Nursing home exception – Although ordinarily you’re required to own and reside in the property for two of the most recent five years, this requirement can be driven down to just one of the five years for those who wind up living in nursing homes. Even better, the length of stay in nursing homes is credited to the USE test, treating the nursing home much like the original house.
