Bob Shipplett: Comedian followed his dreams

The Other Guys, the premier men’s a cappella group from the University of Illinois, and best known for their musicality and unique brand of humor, will open for Mason. The international traveling group has performed twice in Galesburg raising funds for Choral Dynamics but has never performed on the Orpheum’s celebrated stage. As headliner, Mason said he is “happy to close” for The Other Guys. One example that I can vividly recall occurred during a regionally televised game against Syracuse at Memorial Stadium. Taylor and a reserve linebacker, Dan MacLean, loosened up teammates along the sidelines with their jocular play-by-play impersonations of (then) White Sox baseball announcers Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall. At one point, Head Coach Gary Moeller turned around and chuckled, “You two are really good!” On a jaunt down Sixth Street in Campus Town the following spring, I spotted Taylor in a Laundromat and stopped for a visit. Practicing ventriloquism with a dummy sitting on his knee, Taylor informed me that he was going to be a comedian. How could anyone make a decent living being a comedian I wondered — and strangely, I had aspirations of making a living as a teacher and coach.
