Fair parade makes a busy day for Four Corners hot dog stand
Ken Ashenfelter and his grandsons were doing a brisk business this afternoon at their hot dog stand at the Four Corners, the intersection of Main and Maumee streets in downtown Adrian.
The Hot Dog Cart is set up at the Four Corners on Saturdays from April through October, as well as for special events like parades -- continuing all the way through Winterfest in December.
"We want to draw attention to downtown," said Ashenfelter, who grew up in Adrian and remembers when downtown was a busier place. He said the stand gets a good response from downtown merchants and from people who drive past and decide to stop by.
"We make money every time we bring the cart out, after paying our expenses," he said.
His grandsons, Michael Tenniswood, 16, and Tylor Tenniswood, 14, run the hot dog stand with him. Both have their food handlers' cards and have been licensed by the Lenawee County Health Department. "They know how to operate this from the ground up as a business," Ashenfelter said. Michael will be a junior at Adrian High School in the fall and Tylor will be a freshman.
The Hot Dog Cart is in its third summer. "It's just been a lot of fun," Ashenfelter said -- and the fact that he gets to spend time with his grandsons makes it even more so.
