`Corpus Christi' a controversial retelling of the story of Jesus

Arturo Ortiz Jr. is making his directing debut tonight with "Corpus Christi" - and it's bound to get people talking.

"Corpus Christi" is a modern take on the story of Jesus Christ and his Apostles. The general story line is similar to the traditional, following Jesus from the nativity up to his crucifixion . But in the Terrence McNally play, the men are gay and living in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The controversy surrounding this version is not why Ortiz will be premiering the play at The Garage Theatre in Long Beach, where it will play through Aug. 27.

"There's controversy obviously that goes with it, I mean it's a gay Jesus and gay Apostles," Ortiz said. "I'm not trying to make people angry, to be called an agnostic or to bash the church. I'm here to show the connection of these men who love each other and care for this man. And show we can all love each other and all love is right."

The 26-year-old Long Beach resident was bargain book shopping with a friend when he came across the play. His friend recommended he buy it, so he did. After reading it, Ortiz knew it was a story he needed to direct. He had a vision for it that he wanted to see come to life.

Then last October, he was sitting around with members of The Garage Theatre who were discussing the need to fill a spot in their season.

Ortiz knew just the play.

He says the people at The Garage Theatre are a tight-knit group who have a strong following - though this time, the actors in "Corpus Christi" are all new to the theater, so Ortiz hopes they bring in new faces that may not normally come to a show.

One twist of the nearly monthlong production is not one cast member has the lead every night. The 13 actors have a kind of name-drawing method of finding out their role for the evening.

"It's a good challenge and I think it's fun. I think the ultimate goal was to switch stuff up," Ortiz said. "Different people play different parts every night."

But no matter the role, he says the actors have a great dynamic among them that brings the story to life.

Ortiz, who attended Catholic school, says the play's story, along with the actors, make the character of Jesus more accessible to people. And that is what he hopes the audience takes away from it.

"My goal with the play is to be able to show this love these men have for each other - (that) regardless of sexual or not that men can love," Ortiz said.
