Variety show comes to Dallas

A lil’ ol’ country show is moving up from Carroll County to bigtime Dallas.

The Outpost Opry Show will debut in September at Nashville in the Country, 400 Red Mountain Road in Dallas, following the monthly Branson-style variety show’s last performance at the Lowell Opry House in Carroll County Aug. 20.

“Where we’re at is a little remote,” said show producer and host Joey Garland of Winston.

Garland said he hopes to attract bigger audiences. The new venue will hold 280 people; the current one only 170. The Lowell Opry House was sold out for the Outpost Opry’s Christmas special, Garland said.

The bigger stage in Dallas also will allow for use of props in the comedy skits. When the show travels to bigger theaters, such as the Ritz Theater in Talladega, Ala., it includes a skit involving a portable wall with doors cut into it that Garland’s grandfather performed for a live audience on the old WSB Radio Barn Dance.

The clean, corny comedy and bluegrass, gospel and other Southern music appeal to Alabamians and rural west Georgians, Garland said, including Yorkville and Cedartown residents.

“I grew up in a family show,” he said. “My grandfather, Bud Mote, a legendary fiddle player, is in the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame. My uncle, Danny Mote, is in the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.”

The Outpost Opry show began in the Outpost Bluegrass Barn in Tallapoosa three years ago and stayed there about a year, he said. It has been at the Lowell Opry House, 821 Liberty Church Road, more than a year and a half. Both music venues remain open.

Nashville in the Country “had a pretty good run with rockabilly in the ’60s,” Garland said.

“I had actually played out there eight or nine years ago,” he said. Owner Don Tidwell had closed its doors until a call from Garland.

“Our show has inspired him to reopen it,” Garland said. “Don’s going to be part of our show. He’s a fiddle player, a guitar player, an all-around musician.”

Tidwell said he opened Nashville in the Country in 2001 and closed it about four years ago.

“I just took a notion to take a break a while and never did start back up,” he said. He said he’s thinking about getting his brother, bassist Joey Tidwell, and others back together “and playing a little bit.”

The Sept. 17 Outpost Opry will be the venue’s grand reopening.
