Bethesda resident creates first journal dedicated to found poetry

When it comes to poetry, Bethesda resident Jenni B. Baker enjoys the thrill of the hunt. She browses websites like Wikipedia, hunts Twitter feeds and scans the titles of books to find the lines of her next poem. Baker is a fan of found poetry, a style of writing that takes existing text and re-imagines it.

In July, Baker became a conduit for writers of found poetry when she published the inaugural edition of The Found Poetry Review, an online literary journal exclusively dedicated to the style.

Baker became familiar with found poetry while pursuing a master's degree in professional writing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2008. While participating in a poetry group, she was asked to write a poem from the words on a package of Crest White Strips. Baker says this method helped her overcome a lingering case of writer's block.

“I would come home and try to write something original and it just would not happen... found poetry was another option,” Baker, 27, says. “You start looking at other texts so the pressure is not on to you come up with something original out of the box. The originality comes from the sort of splicing and rearranging of it.”

After her 2009 graduation, Baker moved to Bethesda where she works for Goodwill Industries International. She had been stewing over the idea of a found poetry journal for about a year, and was heartened when she realized it may be the first journal to feature the genre exclusively.

“As I was writing found poetry myself,” she says. “As I started to look for outlets to publish it, [I found] … there are some journals that published experimental poetry, but I realized there was no journal for found poetry.”

Before selecting 13 poets and 16 works from North America, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, Baker sifted through some 200 pieces that came in response to her call for submissions starting in April.

While found poetry is a genre of its own, it has few set rules. Baker says the approach of found poets can vary. Writers like Austin Kleon sit down with a Sharpie and cross out phrases until something resembling a poem is left while other poets will present text as is. What's important in each case of found poetry is citing the original material. When she was perusing the entries, Baker looked for pieces that had been re-imagined in interesting ways.

“[I] saw a lot of people just putting spaces and line breaks into texts and just sending it in,” Baker recalls. “What I was really looking for where people who were not only innovative in the verses where the words were from but also the people who had a knack for recombination, rearranging these lines in an innovative way.
