College Countdown—Part I: Tips and Savings for Shopping, Packing and Trucking

Help your child get ready to leave for college is a huge task. Decide what to do, shopping, packing and figuring out how to move all takes thought and time.

Cartage

Before you shop, rent a truck now so your child is in school furniture. Trucks get caught up quickly during back to school season. One year we almost missed the boat, er, truck, when the locations within 25 miles have been booked, and we had a shipment of furniture to take my daughter to school.

Comparison shop for rental trucks, not only companies, but locations within a company’s website. My husband and daughter spent 30 minutes comparison shopping online and saved more than $155 on a 17-foot truck that will also haul a friend’s belongings. The truck cost $314 in Norristown. In Horsham, the same truck from the same company cost $159. Search locations beyond the initial website offerings, which are based on your ZIP code. Rental costs fluctuate like airline fares.

Calculate mileage costs. Any mileage over a package offer can add up fast.

Making a list, checking it twice

Use collegeboard.com’s comprehensive packing list as a template for your shopping list.

Before shopping, check the college’s website or mailings to see what size sheets to buy. Most college beds are extra-long twins.  Nextag.com lists numerous vendors with these sheets, including L.L.Bean’s offer of flannel sheets for $25 and free shipping.

Also, check the college’s policy about what small appliances are allowed in dorm rooms. Schools differ on what electrical appliances students may use in their rooms.

Eversave.com offers wise advice on shopping for college:

1.  When buying items, take the size of the room your child will be in into consideration.

2.  Have your child talk to his or her roommate to determine who needs to bring what.

3.  Take your child shopping with you. Don’t go alone and just buy what you like.

4.   Make sure you get your child everything he or she needs before heading off to school.Once you arrive at school, it is very hectic trying to set up a room and a shop for the necessities.

We needed to pick up some things at Target last year when our second baby moved to the University of Pittsburgh. I saw the tired parents pushing carts overloaded, while their "first year" ahead of schedule, scanning the aisles for most needs. Save yourself the hassle.

Ideas for a bedroom

Having a multi-purpose closet built onto one side of the room will help to store most of the items. Instead of a dressing mirror on the other side of the room and the closet at the corner, you can combine them in one closet which is about 1.2 metres

Furniture and design ideas for a small house?

Walls of light and colors make a space look bigger automatically. However stick with small furniture. Something too big will overpower the air space and small. Everything needs to have two purposes. Try a love seat instead of a couch, or maybe a chair and a half. Or just two chairs in the lounge. Instead of an entertainment center to try just a TV stand or a dresser with a TV on top. Drawers of course be used for storage. Try baskets on top of your kitchen cabinets for more space. Overall less is more.

In small rooms, you should choose furniture that is not overwhelming the space.Less is more in size. Wherever you buy furniture to keep the key on a small scale and low. No overstuffed pieces. Measure your space. People tend to buy what they like, not what works. Heavy furniture to make your oversized instead of taking the smaller space and you can not afford. Buy pieces that have multiple uses as a cocktail table is an ottoman, but opens for storage. Buy wall units that have doors that can accommodate things but is not open to see them. The same thing in the rooms. Buy beds that are on platforms with storage units underneath so you do not have buffets or any additional furniture. Nightstands should have drawers for additional storage. Organize your closets with plastic bins with drawers. Use multiple hangers options for your clothes so they take only one hanger not many. Look for any and all options that have multiple duties and not just take up space and have one. Keep all your furniture simple and contemporary. It’s the easiest in small spaces.
