Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GameCube) Review

Back when Super Mario Bros. 2 came out in Japan — the real Super Mario Bros. 2, known here overseas as The Lost Levels — there was a little label on the box that said “For Super Players.” It meant it, too: Super Mario Bros. 2 is a ridiculously difficult game, often using your knowledge of the first game against you while at the same expanding upon everything that made it such a success. It wasn't a sequel created to introduce new players to the series; it was a game for the hardcore fans of the first looking for new twists and challenges to the Super Mario Bros. structure.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes could have been released with a similar little label on its box because, aside from the fact that it's a first-person adventure game as opposed to an 8-bit platformer, the two are in the same boat. Echoes wasn't a game created to expand the Metroid audience; the changes it makes don't so much improve the game as make it significantly more challenging and complicated. If you're a newcomer to the franchise looking for an entry point, this ain't it. This is one for the hardcore fans, and if you happen to fall into that group, it really doesn't get much better than this.

Echoes makes a lot of additions to the mechanics that Metroid Prime put in place, but once again they're not necessarily improvements, and in many cases they make an already pretty complex structure even more complicated. The main addition here is the ability to travel between the regular game world and its “dark world,” counterpart, which is a gameplay mechanic/story device that has been popular in Nintendo games since Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past . Much like in A Link to the Past, Echoes' dark world is typically a more twisted and visually morose doppelgänger of the standard overworld (or “Light World”) that presents its fare share of gameplay differences, complications and restrictions. The biggest kicker is that in the dark world, your health will constantly drain if you're not in one of its globular “safe zones,” which are scattered around at pretty reasonable intervals. Retro Studios wanted this dark world to be a moody, evil and constantly oppressive contrast to the light world, and from a gameplay standpoint it definitely succeeded; with your health constantly draining when in its confines, being in the dark world always feels like a genuine inconvenience, and even as you gain power-ups and advanced weaponry, you never feel like you have the upper hand as these upgrades are typically combated with tougher enemies and more challenging level design. Not to mention a lot of the best weapons you acquire will be restricted by the use of ammo, which isn't given out very liberally.

How do you unlock mirror mode on super mario kart ds and wii?

Mario 64 – 7/10 pretty fun, graphics are good, especially for one of the first games on the ds. it’s nearly identical to the 64 one, so meh kind of not one of my favourties.

zelda 8.5/10 really good. never been a fan of the zelda series, but i really liked this one. graphics are good as well.

mario kart 9/10 online just makes this game = WIN. so much fun online. graphics are good, better than the 64′s i think.

new super mario bros. 9.5/10 probably the best game on DS. so much fun. love the graphics, it’s crisp clear. i’ve beaten the 100% on all 3 save files.

Answer by Caleb N If you are looking for a portable game, then Mario Kart DS is the obvious choice. It’s the only one of the three that you can carry around in your pocket, and the 64 tracks (not including the few balloon battle arenas) will have you playing for hours. The game gives a really classic Mario Kart experience, but with total inclusion also being able to select your kart along with your person (something that was visited on in the previous Mario Kart, Double Dash, for the Gamecube). Among an assortment of DS games, I’d suggest it.

If you really don’t need a portable game, but you still absolutely adore Mario Kart, get the Wii incarnation. It’s also a great idea to get this if you have friends (because the multiplayer is always more phenomenal than the single-player), and… Well, that’s about it. It’s Mario Kart, just like it’s always been, and with the new inclusion of bikes and about thirty playable characters (including your Mii at some point). The Wi-Fi makes it possible to race online, but so does Mario Kart DS.

I’ve been a fan of Mario platformers since I first got to play Super Mario Bros. for the NES and Super Mario 64 for the system of its namesake, the Nintendo 64. So, of course, I’d likely tell you to pick Super Mario Galaxy of these three. The game’s array of worlds (which are called Galaxies) is absolutely brilliant, and the producers really did go all-out on giving you the more classic experience that some people thought you missed out a lot on with Super Mario Sunshine. Mario is back in all of his acrobatics along with the new Spin move that gives this game a more unique twist. Great for beginners all the way up to players that would like to call themselves hardcore, Super Mario Galaxy is without a doubt one of the best titles for the Wii. It is, however, an almost entirely one-player game like most other Mario games with a story (the largest difference now being the newer game, “New Super Mario Brothers: Wii”). A second person may join in with their Wii remote to help you collect star bits, though. The Lumas are absolutely adorable, too, which is probably a plus. You’re able to play this game twice through, the first with Mario and the second with Luigi. For total completion, there are 121 Stars (Yay, stars! Not “Shine Sprites”! ) for each hero, and you can only get 120 of them for each person until Luigi swipes his 120th star.
