OUTDOORS: MAC to host youth sportsmen's week
Hunter safety education courses are becoming harder to find, probably due to the dwindling supply of volunteers who donate considerable time to teach the courses. It's a demographic reality that there are fewer senior hunters available to pass on the hunting tradition, and many of those older sportsmen were the instructors for hunter safety classes.
The folks at the Montezuma Audubon Center (MAC) in Savannah, Wayne County, have come up with a very unique and exciting event, which not only provides a week of hunter safety courses, but gives youngsters an opportunity for actual field experiences.
The MAC has scheduled the Youth Sportsmen's Week for Aug. 15-19. Girls and boys ages 12-14 are invited to the Center for a week of Sportsman's Education. The classes will take place from 8 a.m. to 5p.m.
Get your hunter safety, bow safety and waterfowl identification certificates all in the same week. The courses will be taught using hands-on experience and lots of time in the field.
For example, during the gun course, youngsters will be outside for the shoot-don't shoot lesson. They will learn basic safety precautions at different stations that simulate actual situations.
There will also be outside stations during the ethics classes. Students will be taught about posted property, how to ask permission to hunt private land, transporting game, and what to expect if approached by an Environmental Conservation Officer.
Specific hunting experiences will include sitting in the woods and using a variety of turkey calls, and for the waterfowl course, students will sit in an actual blind while learning duck calls.
Registration is very limited so don't wait. Call the Montezuma Audubon Center to register at (315) 365-3588. The cost for the week is $45 per student. Leading support for the Youth Sportsman's Week is provided by Bass Pro Shops, Auburn, NY.
DEC announces new record brown trout
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has certified Dan Germain from Forestport, Oneida County, is the new holder of the state record for brook trout. Mr. Germain reeled in the record-breaking fish on June 15 while fishing at South Lake in Herkimer County in the southwest corner of the Adirondack Park. The new record brook trout, caught on a Lake Clear Wabbler and worm, measured 22 inches and weighed in at 5 pounds, 8 ounces, surpassing the previous state record set in 2009 by 3.5 ounces.
