Justin Bieber, toys and free donuts — children share suggestions for village

On a sunny summer morning, children at Carol Stream’s Rainbow Academy are busy enjoying their morning snack of cereal bars and milk while others are dressed in their bathing suits getting ready to slide down the preschool’s massive water side in the backyard.

Although children are mostly focused on when their next recess is going to be and what mom packed them for lunch, it’s easy to forget that these children could potentially be the future leaders of Carol Stream or its neighboring communities.

The children at Rainbow Academy range anywhere in age from infants to 12 years old.

Director Lindsey Cortino said the children have creative, fun minds and spend their summer days in camp activities that include games, field trips and swimming. During the school year, the children engage in academic learning.

“They’re not all aware of what the mayor in town does, but they all know about the president,” Cortino said. “We’re working on that.”

Meanwhile, Carol Stream Mayor Frank Saverino said he’s used to getting ideas from children.

Saverino, who has grandchildren who range in age from 3 to 25, said he often visits elementary schools and is surprised by what the kids want to know.

“I get more tax questions than I do anything else,” he said. “They want to know where the money goes and to understand what happens when they flush the toilet.”

Saverino’s also been entertained by the ideas children have, such as one who suggested a tram be built that makes stops all around town.

“They just want to understand how the town works,” he said. “In school, we’re more interested to teach them about the past, but what about what’s happening today in their town?”

While Carol Stream might not get a castle anytime soon, as one child at Rainbow Academy suggested, Saverino said with libraries, pools and parks available, children today have it good.

“I think a lot of this is taken for granted,” he said. “There is always something to do here.”

The children took a break from their morning activities to discuss with the Press what they would do if they were the mayor.

Although none of the children said they want to be a mayor someday, it’s very possible these children could find the cure for cancer, be the next NFL superstar or win an Academy Award.

Directions: Have the children sit in a circle on the floor or in chairs. Have a paper bag or sack that contains some interesting objects like an apple, a pencil, a paper cup, etc. Make sure there is nothing sharp in the bag. Blindfold a child with a handkerchief. Let that child pull an item out of the bag. Have them try to guess what object they are holding. If they are right, give that child a small prize (sucker or sticker), leave the object out of the bag, and have them return to their seat. If the child guess incorrectly, let them sit back down and be eligible for another turn. Let the children take turns until everyone has guessed something correctly and won a prize.

A good snack for this lesson would be:

Butterfly Bites Ingredients: Celery stalk cut into fourths 8 twisted pretzels (small) 8 stick pretzels (thin) Cream cheese Directions: Spread cream cheese in the middle of the celery slices. Stick the twisted pretzels in the cream cheese to make the wings. Stick the pretzel sticks in the front of the celery make antennae.

Fold each piece in a triangle shape and seal the ends. Bake for the amount of time suggested on the package. Cover with powdered sugar while still warm. Art Center Ideas String Painting Materials: Cardstock paper Pieces of string about 15 inches long Paint Styrofoam plates Directions: Fold the sheet of cardstock paper in half. Hold a length of string by one end and dip the other end in a color of paint. Make sure the end in the paint gets covered.
